Dielectric Resonator Antennas


Richtmyer in his seminal work of 1939, has theoretically proven that the DR placed in the open environment, must radiate into free space. This fact provided the foundation for the development of DRAs and in 1983, the first systematic study on the cylindrical DRA was conducted. Dielectric resonator antennas (DRAs) as compared to conventional microstrip antennas have shown potential characteristics such as small size, relatively larger bandwidth, high radiation efficiency (due to negligible conductor loss and surface wave generation), ease of excitation. Being a volumetric radiator (3D structure), the DR structure provides more flexibility and degrees of freedom to design the antenna with specific requirements. More interestingly, the possibility of excitation of multiple orthogonal modes in a single DR can be used to design multiple decoupled antenna ports to realize MIMO/diversity system without the requirement of multi antenna elements. 

In this particular domain, I have investigated various non-canonical configurations of the DRAs for both wideband and multi-band functionalities. The designs have also been utilized for the implementation of 2 and 4-element Multiple-Input Multiple-Output (MIMO) configurations, which aim to achieve spatial and polarization diversity. Additionally, co-radiator design has been investigated realize a compact and low-profile diversity DRA.
