Huygens' Metasurfaces


Metasurfaces — 2D counterparts of metamaterials, are planar structures composed of a two-dimensional array of meta-atoms or polarizable particles arranged in a periodic or quasi-periodic manner. Huygens' metasurfaces consists of co-located orthogonal electric and magnetic dipoles, which form an array of Huygens' sources.  Such metasurfaces can perform desired field transformation utilizing Schelkunoff ’s equivalence principle -- rigorous formulation of Huygens' principle. 

We have conducted investigation on the coarsely or aggressively discretized Huygens' metasurface. In the realm of coarse discretization, the periodicity selects a discrete set of Floquet channels referred to as Floquet-Bloch modes – a series of propagating and evanescent plane waves excited by periodic structure. The metasurface is designed with a specific periodicity in order to redirect an incoming wave towards one of the higher order propagating FB modes, rather than imposing an additional transverse momentum. The unwanted modes are suppressed by carefully engineering the scatterers within the period.
